A foggy morning by the Hudson. The kind of fog that hovers just above the water surface, in the center of the channel, stretches the length of the river, and obscures all but the uppermost portions of the tallest structures on the western shore. As the sky brightens behind the thinning clouds, the base of the fog transforms from opaque to translucent, allowing a diffuse image of the shoreline to show through the lower part of the mist, while still concealing the middle section of the skyline and now veiling the upper part as well. When the sun finally breaks through the cloud cover, the fog begins to lift, rising to a point where only the tops of the buildings across the river are shrouded in mist. Then in the warming air, the fog slowly dissipates until the last vestiges of vapor vanish.
Above the river
A gauzy ribbon of fog
Veils the western shore.
